| ABOUT US
The mission of Trout Unlimited (TU) is to conserve, protect and restore North America's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. TU accomplishes this mission on local, state and national levels with
an extensive and dedicated volunteer network. TU's national office and
its regional offices employ professionals who represent the organization
on a national and federal level and coordinate the efforts of the organization's
150,000 volunteers in 450 chapters nationwide to keep them active and
involved in conservation issues. Nutmeg Chapter Geographic Area Nutmeg Chapter (# 217) is comprised of Fairfield and the surrounding towns of Westport, Weston, Easton, Trumbull, Bridgeport, Redding, Monroe, Shelton, Stratford, and Milford. As Connecticut’s oldest continuously-active TU chapter, Nutmeg
has over 350 members. Chapter meetings are fun and informative events which are presented as a service to chapter members and the public. They include opportunity to meet and socialize with other chapter members and friends. The meetings are open to the general public and there is no charge. The meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month from September through May at 7:30 p.m. at the Fayerweather Yacht Club, 51 Brewster Street in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport, near the Fairfield/Bridgeport line just minutes off I-95 (see map). The club has a cash bar for refreshments. After a brief update on significant chapter issues, events and concerns,
the meetings feature a guest speaker who gives a presentation on fishing
techniques, conservation, travel, or other topics of interest. Following
the guest speaker, a raffle is held to defray the costs of the meeting,
the speakers, and the mailing of our monthly newsletter,
Nutmeg Notes. Nutmeg Chapter coordinates fishing trips for members to places such as the Connetquot State Park Preserve on Long Island, the Housatonic River, and the Beaverkill River and the Willowemoc Creek in the Catskills. Locally, stream cleanups and stream improvement projects are held on a regular basis. Nutmeg also provides assistance to the Connecticut DEP in their stream stocking, fish population surveys, and wild fish relocation projects. The chapter donates funds and equipment to kindred local and regional organizations, schools, and youth education groups. Its members donate home-tied flies to - and volunteer for - Casting for Recovery, which provides fly-fishing retreats for breast cancer survivors. It also provides financial support to TU National's "Embrace-A-Stream" program as well as regional organizations such as the American Museum of Fly Fishing, American Rivers, Aspetuck Land Trust, Atlantic Salmon Federation, Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum, Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen, Mill River Wetland Committee, Rivers Alliance of Connecticut, Save the Sound / Connecticut Fund for the Environment and the Theodore Gordon Flyfishers. As a constituent chapter of the TU
Connecticut Council, the chapter works with other Connecticut TU
chapters on projects of statewide interest, an example being the return
of a natural flow regime to the Housatonic River when its hydropower
license was renewed in 2004. Meetings of the chapter’s Board of Directors are held on the
second Tuesday of the month (a week before the general membership meeting).
Meetings are held at the Fairfield
Public Library (main library) starting at 7:00 p.m. Chapter members
are welcome and encouraged to attend (please notify the president or
vice-president ahead of time if attending). At these meetings, chapter
business, conservation issues, and chapter activities, events and outings
are planned and coordinated. For more information, please contact a
